REFLECTIONS ON COLLAGE/DRAWING 307

June 27, 2018

Refections on Drawing / Collage with Sunny - the perfect beginning of year 3 at ECUAD.

I enjoy the gathering of found objects and materials, particularly, wood, metal, analogue documents, architectural pieces and nature. I find the artistic challenge of working with a careful selection of materials can create new meaning and connections for juxtaposed images and objects. Through collage I explore how materials can complement each other and how I can create pleasing lines, forms, balance and space. With each collage  bringing with it its own challenges and discoveries of how various materials may overlap and bridge in meaning. I enjoy the challenge of re-interpreting and repurposing these materials into a new form that revolves around a focused subject, idea or feeling. I have used magazine and paper collage in the past as a method of sketching ideas for paintings and creating compositions that are unexpected. Through the drawing / collage class I was pleased to explore new forms of collage and watch how methodologies overlapped projects as well as how themes would emerge. I would like to incorporate collage back into my painting practice and find new ways to add an assemblage element to my 2 dimensional work. Through the 3D studies and final project I was able to explore my love of dwellings and land, finding a new outlet for my desire to construct through the assemblage of found objects. I really enjoyed the public interaction of the outdoor assemblage piece and I look forward to working in this way on future projects.
