Knowing Colour

This project was started in 2018 after a class discussion on Jessica Eaton, Tomma Abts and Uta Barth. Inspired by their work, I was reflecting on how I choose colours for my paintings. Can this process be neutral and not draw upon existing familiarity? What if colours were nameless? How can today manifest itself as a colour? In response, I began a month long - daily studio practice of recording a colour with acrylic paint on paper. The practice seemed to flow between the name proceeding the colour and vice versa. Although the individual taxonomy of colour can be shared and relatable to others, the response will be specific to the viewer. With the addition of words to the visual phenomena of colour, visual associations and responses are endless. I revisited this work by creating a year long colour calendar for 2022 which was exhibited in December 2023.
